Accessibility

We want anyone to be able to find out about our work and get in touch, whatever device or assistive technology they use.

The standard we aim for

We aim to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA — the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines published by the W3C, and the benchmark referenced by the Australian Human Rights Commission for compliance with the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth).

An honest caveat. This site has been built to that standard and checked by its developer, but it has not been independently audited or tested with a full range of assistive technologies. We are describing an aim and the work done toward it, not a certified result.

What we've done

  • Keyboard access. Every link, button and form field can be reached and operated with a keyboard, and the focused element is always visibly outlined.
  • Skip link. A "skip to content" link appears on first tab, so keyboard and screen-reader users can bypass the navigation.
  • Semantic structure. Real headings, lists and landmarks, in a logical order, so screen readers can navigate by structure.
  • Text alternatives. Every meaningful image has descriptive alt text. Decorative images are hidden from screen readers rather than announced as noise.
  • Reduced motion. If your device is set to reduce motion, animations are switched off and content appears immediately. Content is never hidden behind an animation that might not run.
  • Colour contrast. Text and background combinations are chosen to meet the AA contrast ratio, and colour is never the only way information is conveyed.
  • Labels and errors. Every form field has a visible label, required fields are marked in text as well as colour, and status messages are announced to screen readers.
  • Responsive and zoomable. The site reflows down to small screens and up to 200% zoom without content being cut off or requiring horizontal scrolling.
  • Works without JavaScript. All content and contact details remain readable and usable if scripts fail to load.

Known limitations

  • The site has not been formally tested with screen readers such as NVDA, JAWS or VoiceOver.
  • Photographs of completed work are illustrative. Their alt text describes the subject but cannot convey every detail of the workmanship shown.
  • If you accept analytics cookies, a third-party script from Google is loaded. We do not control its accessibility characteristics.
